Alert #28

Hi everyone,

I do hope this note finds you enjoying yourselves, family and friends.

Often during this summer, I awake wondering if I need to prepare myself for the day as if I were living near the equator or whether I should seek higher ground to prepare for the coming monsoons as predicted. Oh, how I look forward to the crisp air of autumn and the magnificent landscapes it provides.

During this past year we have continued to support programs and initiatives of past years. In additions to those worthy undertakings, we have been able to manage request for assistance through our newly formed Finance Committee. This committee makes recommendations to the Executive Committee on those requests that are both financially feasible and those that will do the best for the students, staff and community. Many of the programs we have supported throughout the year are:

Christ Episcopal Church- Soup Kitchen.

Community Food Pantry.

REACH Foundation Teacher Grants/ classroom projects for Elementary and Middle School.

Donations to both the Suffern Free and Sloatsburg Libraries.

Panorama Yearbook Ad.

Purchase of four HS yearbooks for those in need of assistance.

SHS Musical Ad

Donation to the SHS Crew team.

Donation to the SHS- Purple Pouch project

SRTC-SEA Family Scholarship

I would be remiss if I did not mention that all these projects and donations would not be possible without your continued generosity and support. Your $15 dues do go a long way to help those in need and support valuable school programs.

We have seen an increase in our VOTE COPE contributions over the past few years. This increase has helped support many NYSUT programs and issues facing union members and retirees. It also benefits us directly by providing us with a rebate that is used to support our local chapter. Our rebate has in creased by 17.5% this year. Yetonly 177 members out of 400 hundred members have submitted their dues. Seventeen percent (17%) have committed to be active in our chapter and meet the requirements to benefit from the many programs offered through NYSUT.

Our history has shown that we have often found solidarity as union members to support those initiatives that would benefit our students, colleagues and the community when needed. The district and community are witnessing many challenges. The staff and district are laser focused on providing a strong learning environment for all children. Yet, many in the community face difficult challenges ranging from food insecurity, unemployment and fear. The Federal government’s cut to vital social safety-net programs have had a crushing impact on many members in our community and throughout country. We, with your continued support and generosity, will strive to help where we can.

Finally, I would like to mention how the Luncheon Committee has been busy planning our Fall Luncheon scheduled for September 29th. Together we will be celebrating our newest retirees, the class of 2026.

We are still encouraging our members to take advantage of our File of Life program. These packets can be always carried with you and will provide emergency responders access to vital medical information if taken to a hospital. Additionally, a larger packet is provided that can be placed on your refrigerator for easy access for ambulance personnel in the event of an emergency at home. No more searching for medical information or collecting medicine bottles to transport to the ER.

We will be giving all members, (who are current with their dues) attending the luncheon one (1) free File of Life packet. Additional packets can be purchased for $1:00. What a bargain! For those who are unable to attend, you too can purchase a packet for a $1:00 (a discounted price) but must send a SASE to:

Judy Veltidi

35 Van Orden Ave.

Suffern, NY 10901

The Executive Committee and all committee members are looking forward to working on behalf of our chapter and members; keeping you abreast of happenings in our school community, issues facing our union and those impacting us as retirees.

Hoping to see many of you at our September 29th Fall Luncheon. Until then, enjoy the rest of this summer. Stay safe, be well,

Phil

File of Life

The Executive Committee has invested in a program which we feel will help our members.  File of Life provides users with a way to gather important medical and emergency contact information in the event of a medical emergency.  There are two components:  a card that can be kept in your wallet, and a larger card containing contact information for all your doctors that can be placed on your refrigerator in case a medical emergency should occur at home.  Police, ambulance, and medivac crews are all trained to look for these File of Life cards.

How does it help you?

  • First responders will instantly know your medical history, and can begin appropriate treatment more quickly.

  • At the hospital, your medical information is available immediately.

  • The people (relatives/friends) you designate are notified quickly.

All SRTC-SEA members who have paid their $15 dues for the 2025-26 year are eligible for one free packet.  Many of our members have already taken advantage of this.  If you have not done so, and would like to receive your packet, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to:

Judy Veltidi
35 Van Orden Ave.
Suffern, NY 10901

Want additional packets for a spouse/relative/friend?

Additional sets are available for $1.50 each, with a stamped, self-addressed envelope for each set.

Alert #1 (correction)

Sorry for the inconvenience, but we have to correct two things from our last alert about Medicare reimbursement.

1.  The district paid $555/quarter (total:  $2220/year).  If you have a spouse who also receives reimbursement, s/he would have received the same amount.

2.  The deadline for submitting the reimbursement form to the district is February 20, 2026.

Thank you for your understanding.

Alert #1 (start of a new year, 2026)

Medicare reimbursement

A number of our members have told us that they have not received the email sent out by the District regarding Medicare reimbursement.  We are sending you this information, and also including links to the 3 pages that the District sent out (the reimbursement letter, the reimbursement form, and the direct deposit form).  The links are attached.

Medicare Letter 2026.pdf
Medicare Reimbursement Form 2026.pdf
Medicare Direct Deposit Form 2026.pdf

Retirees on Medicare:

Reminder… It is that time of year again.  There are two parts to Medicare reimbursement from the district.

All Retirees on Medicare:

The district is required to reimburse ALL employees for their basic Part B Medicare premiums as part of the NYSHIP Empire Plan Health insurance you brought into retirement with you. Since you retired, they would have been sending you checks (or direct depositing the money) every 3 months (mid-March, mid-June, mid-September, and mid-December).  To receive this reimbursement, you must fill in the form that is emailed to you.

PLEASE NOTE:  You must send in a copy of your Medicare card (and your spouse’s card, if applicable) with your form.

Employees eligible for IRMAA:

Some people are also entitled to get an additional amount (IRMAA), but ONLY IF THEY ASK FOR IT!  If your total income exceeded a certain amount, you had more money deducted from your Social Security payment for Medicare Part B surcharge.  This is known as IRMAA (Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount.)

**How would you know?  Check your SSA-1099 when you get it.  (These forms are mailed out in January or are available at your online Social Security account [if you have set one up] at sss.gov).

  • Compare the figure that is on your form SSA 1099 with amount the district sent you in Medicare reimbursement each quarter. In 2025, a single person should have received $550/quarter (total: $2200/year); a couple received $1100/quarter quarter (total:  $4400/year).  You can determine if you received these amounts by checking your bank statements.  Compare these amounts with your SSA 1099 form.   If there is a difference, then you can ask for reimbursement.

  • NOTE:  District is NOT obligated to reimburse IRMAA Part D for prescription plan.

In order to receive this reimbursement, you must mail a copy of your SSA 1099 form with your reimbursement form to:
