Reminder… It is that time of year again. Retirees may request excess Part B Medicare reimbursement from Suffern Central SD, only if they have met certain criteria.
Any questions? Check with your tax advisor. Call Suffern Central business office 845-357-7783. We cannot and will not answer any questions. Information only is being sent to you.
Regarding reimbursement… The district is required to reimburse employees for their Part B Medicare premiums as part of the NYSHIP Empire Plan Health insurance you brought into retirement with you. Since you retired, they would have been sending you checks every 3 months. Some, are entitled to get that additional amount, but ONLY IF THEY ASK FOR IT!
**How would you know? Check your SSA-1099 when you get it shortly. (Typically sent out for tax season starting mid January)
· Compare figure that is on form SSA 1099 with amount the district sent you in Medicare reimbursement checks each quarter. (Add quarterly checks up and this is the total amount sent to you by the district. Compare with SSA 1099 form.) If there is a difference, then you can ask for reimbursement.
· Additionally, some people, but again not all, whose total income exceeded a set amount had more money deducted from their Social Security payments, sort of a Medicare Part B premium surcharge called IRMAA (Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount). The district must also reimburse this amount, but again, ONLY IF YOU ASK FOR IT! NOTE: District is NOT obligated to reimburse IRMAA Part D for prescription plan.
· To determine if they owe you money, look at your SSA-1099 where it says “Medicare Part B premiums deducted from your benefits”. Compare that amount to the total amount of the checks you received from the district during the year. If the amount on your SSA-1099 is more, then they owe you money; if not, then they don’t.
To get what they owe you, send a letter to the Benefits Office in Hillburn asking for the money owed to you. Include a copy of your SSA-1099 that you receive.
Mail SSA 1099 form and letter of request for reimbursement to:
